It's been awhile since I've been on the bike, either outdoors (see MotionBased log) or indoors (my last bike trainer ride was on Feb. 28--sigh.)
I wanted to make this at least 10 miles but it'd been too long off the bike and the kiddo had passed out in an uncomfortable position in her bouncer, so I bailed off the trainer at 8.15 miles. The only goal I did achieve was biking at least 20 minutes to get some cardio benefit.
From the tiny print:
3/12/08 ~~ Distance 8.15 mil. ~~ Elapsed Time (Min:Sec) 23:12 ~~ Avg. Speed 21.1 mph ~~ Max. Speed 27.2 mph ~~ Calories 635 calories ~~ Avg. Heart 156 bpm ~~ Max. Heart Rate 166 bpm ~~ Avg. Cadence 64 rpm
And since I haven't mentioned it, no, I've had no weight loss since starting this but I haven't stuck with it reliably and I haven't successfully cut back on my Dr Pepper intake.
The cadence sensor is installed and functioning, so I now have distance and speed data for my indoor bike trainer workouts. Sadly, that's still not enough data to make MotionBased.com happy so that I can log my indoor workouts right alongside my outdoor workouts. We are anxiously awaiting the launch of Garmin Connect's new features since they acquired MotionBased.com. Until then, I think I'll resort to screenshots from Garmin Training Center (a desktop app) for sharing my indoor bike trainer rides --
In case the Larger View is unviewable:
10.4 miles, 30:06 min, 20.7mph avg. speed, 37.3mph max, ~819 cal, 158bpm average heartrate, 169 max heartrate, 62rpm cadence
The dip in the middle is the stop I had to make to tend to Sara because she was having a meltdown. She has a love-hate relationship with me on the trainer--she loves me, hates me on the trainer. ;)
I rode 14.89 miles with Justin and his BIL, David, this afternoon, and am feeling great. See the ride's stats from my Garmin Forerunner 305+heartrate strap at http://tinyurl.com/2xaywq; you can compare my heartrate to Justin's (his stats, here). He's in far better cardiovascular shape than I am right now.
We even swung by Bulverde Airpark where a former co-worker (former executive) has his home-built aircraft (RV9) hangared. She (all aircraft, like ships, are female) is a beauty--I was trying to be polite, so I didn't snap a Blackberry photo... only to have Justin confide to me that any owner of an aircraft would be thrilled to have someone take photos of his baby. Point taken.)
With the installation of my indoor bike trainer not happening until Tuesday (it arrived late Monday), and all the yard work on Thursday, I only got two bike trainer sessions in this week and today's outdoor ride, but that's nothing to sneeze at given all the weeks prior.
My cadence sensor didn't behave so I don't have cadence data for today's ride, which doesn't matter to me outdoors but is a PITA for the bike trainer sessions (because MotionBased sucks for GPS-trackless activities.). I hope to get the cadence sensor issue resolved ASAP. Tomorrow's a recovery day from the bike, though. I feel great but don't want to burn myself out.
So I was jazzed to upload my "Indoor Bike Trainer (Day #1)" Garmin Forerunner 305 data, which obviously for an indoor stationary bike ride just amounts to TIME and HEART RATE (via the 305's heartrate monitor), at least until my CADENCE sensor arrives (thereby delivering SPEED and DISTANCE data.)
In plain English, here's what I did today on the indoor bike trainer:
10 min, sustained
(5 minute break to eat and hydrate--had NO energy)
15 min, sustained
LONG break, hoped Sara would be ready for me to do 20 minutes, sustained
10 min, sustained
(-DONE- Sara had meltdown)
Total: 35 min.
Heart Rate:
Average 152 bpm
Peak 167 bpm
I uploaded my 305's data to MotionBased.com once, twice, three times. Hard-headed gal that I am, I was in denial as to why nothing from my ride was showing up in my Detail or Inbox views. Then I saw all three of today's datasets were flagged as "Insufficient data." That blows, but I figured maybe it's flagged because there's no speed or GPS track, and maybe once my cadence sensor arrives, that will make MotionBased.com happy.
Then I clicked on a help icon next to one of the data flags -- "MotionBased currently requires GPS Track data to create an activity. Support for non-GPS activities is a high priority and will be added in the near future." (This message has been on their website since at least November 2006, by the way -- See?)
grrrrrrrrrrr!
Justin texted me the suggestion to see if Garmin's Training Center desktop app would accept the data, and it does... sort of. Due to something wonky in either the way I configured the unit or used it, Garmin Training Center is missing 25 minutes of the ride! It pulls in just two sessions, and one of those sessions is -0- duration. Meanwhile, MotionBased.com correctly shows 3 sessions totalling 35 minutes, but it won't display that except to say it won't work because there's no track. I know Garmin acquired the website so hopefully their initial rollout will address this inadequacy? (At least they're hiring!)
So much for motivation through publication (my actual bike rides get uploaded to MotionBased.com, and thereby populate the "Building a Fitter Geek" RSS sidebar on the right side of GeekHabitat.com. With these two issues, it looks like there's simply no way to get my indoor bike trainer rides logged, as well.
Sigh.
The data is useful to me, regardless, but the geek in me wanted to be able to chart my progress online, as I'd grown accustomed to doing in my fitter, more active days.
This is what I need to work myself up to (data is from Justin's ride this past Sunday) -- almost 2 hours of sustained riding, with his heartrate in Zone 4 or above for over 60% of that time. Of course, he's been riding for almost 2 years now (as of March), including the Valero MS 150 (150 miles in 2 days, San Antonio to Beeville for Day #1, Beeville to Corpus Christi for Day #2) and, more recently, Conquer the Coast (Corpus Christi.) ...It's a start (judging by my red face, a long overdue start!) Full disclosure: it was 10 minutes, followed by a 5 minute break to hydrate and eat an energy bar (skipped breakfast and hadn't grabbed lunch yet--my usual bad habit), then back on the bike for 15 minutes with no breaks. I was shooting for 20 minutes that session, but Sara was fussing in her bouncer.

Sadly, all my heartrate data is locked in limbo thanks to MotionBased.com and some kind of glitch affecting Garmin Training Center which might have been user error. So much for logging my indoor training rides the way I log the outdoor ones.
I had planned to use the kiddo's blue mats underneath the entire bike footprint, in case of grease from the chain ring or from the bike trainer itself, but that didn't leave me much clearance below my rear tire when I'm on the bike, so out that plan went. No wonder they charge $50 for ultra-thin rubber mats to go under bike trainers. Oh well. I figure a towel or two will serve the same purpose, and maybe once I lose some weight the bike+trainer won't sink so far on the mat? (Hey, a chick can dream!)
So, I plan on logging my first bike trainer ride tomorrow, although my Garmin cadence & speed sensor for my Forerunner 305 won't be in for a couple more days--so I won't have distance data; thanks to the 305, however, I will have heart rate data so I can focus on achieving/maintaining target heart rate zones during my indoor training rides.
I haven't planned my workouts yet, but I hope to log at least three rides during the week and either an indoor trainer ride or a real-life road ride with Justin on the weekends. That'd be four sessions of solid cardio that I just plain am not getting right now.
Hopefully, the kiddo will think watching me spinning away on the bike is high entertainment, and I will be able to get in 30-, 45-, 60-minute workouts. We'll see if popping her in her exersaucer or bouncer works, or if I have to devise an elaborate Toddler Containment Unit with our existing self-supporting baby gates (still need to buy a hardware-mounted one for the top of the stairs.)
